The Enviroment
Greta Thunberg is an environmental activist. She was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2003. When she was eight, she started learning about climate change. At the age of 11, Greta became so sad about climate change that she temporarily stopped speaking! Greta has Asperger syndrome, a condition that affects how people socialise. But Greta views her condition as a positive, calling it her "superpower". In August 2018, Greta decided to take action. Instead of going to school, she made a large sign that read "SCHOOL STRIKE FOR CLIMATE", and calmly sat down outside the Swedish parliament, to get politicians to take action. She has inspired a global movement of millions of young people in more than 180 countries.
Medicine
Alexander Fleming was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1881.
In 1922, Fleming discovered the lysozyme. This is a bactericidal enzyme that prevents infections and it is present in numerous substances secreted by living beings, such as tears, saliva or nasal secretions. It acts as a barrier against infections. This discovery was very important because it shows the possibility that there were substances that, while harmless to the body's cells, were lethal to bacteria.
A years later, in 1928, Alexander Fleming found mould growing on a Petri dish of Staphylococcus bacteria. He noticed that the mould seemed to be preventing the bacteria around it from growing. He soon identified that the mould produced a self-defence chemical that could kill bacteria. He named the substance penicillin. This has been called as "the greatest contribution medical science ever made to humanity."
Finally, in 1945 he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine.
